The Holton Recorder, Thursday May 2, 1946, pg2: SOMMERS
John W. Sommers, youngest child of Frederick and Kathrine Sommers, was born November 10, 1866, in Brant Kingdom, Bavaria, and passed from this life on April 22, 1946, at his home east of Mayetta, Kas., at the age of 79 years, five months and 12 days.
John came to America August 13, 1883 when he [was] past sixteen years of age, to visit [his] brother. He liked this country [?] he never returned to the land [of his] birth. He spent some time with [his] brother, Henry, at South Bend, Ind., later he came to Leavenworth, Kas., where he worked a short time, he then came on to Holton, Kas., where he worked and farmed until 1910 when he moved to his present farm home, where he passed away on April 22.
John united with the German Lutheran church in early childhood. When he came to Holton he united with the Evangelical church and remained a faithful member and most earnest Christian. He was a faithful worker both in the Sunday school and in the church. He served as a teacher in the Sunday school and as assistant superintendent. He was also one of the leaders of the Sunday school at Cedar Valley church, Denison, Kas., as long as services were held there.
On March 9, 1892, John was united in marriage to Emma Ellen Acker. To them were born nine children, six of whom survive their father. The many happy years of home life they shared together was climaxed four years ago when they had the joy of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.
John had been in failing health for several years and on April 11, suffered a stroke. From that time on his strength failed rapidly until the time of his death. He was preceded in death by three of his children: John, the oldest child who died in infancy; Mrs. Anna George and Carl Florentine, better known as 'Bud'; also by one grandchild, Anna Kathrine George. Those left to mourn his death, besides his faithful and loving wife, are: George and Lydia of the home; Walter of Mayetta; Mrs. Margaret Saunders of Malin, Ore.; Mrs. Lillie Ball of Holton, Kas., and Mrs. Emma Tucker of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
A service of memory and memorial was conducted at the Evangelical church on April 26 by his pastor, Rev. Thomas J. Miller. A mixed quartet including Mrs. Gordon Riederer, Miss Rose Jacobs, Mr. Cal Zibell and Mr. Carl Sacher, sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Mrs. Guy Blough was at the organ console. Pallbearers were, Geo. Hanson, Elmer Johnson, Everett Stevens, Wallace Hunt, William Lenton and Raymond Gilbert. Burial was made in the Holton cemetery.
