During the Revolutionary War he was 3rd mate of the letter of marque ship "Polly" of which his father was captain. In 1782 the vessel was captured by the British, and Joseph was a prisoner of war on parole at Windsor, Nova Scotia.
He was a selectman of Gloucester for 5 years (1804- 1807).
5 October, 1787 he was made a Master Mason in Tyrian Lodge No. 1 held in Gloucester, Ma.
