Isaac Franklin Abercrombie was the youngest child of Isaac and Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie. His parents were wed on 02 Nov 1837 at Benton Co., AL (confirmed by the Abercrombie Family Bible and extant marriage record). Benton County, which was established on December 18, 1832, no longer exists. It was named for Thomas Hart Benton, a member of the United States Senate from Missouri. On January 29, 1858 Benton County was renamed Calhoun County in honor of John C. Calhoun, famous member of the United States Senate from South Carolina.

Isaac's parents had migrated into Benton County, AL and were farmers raising a large family. Gold had been discovered at Arbacoochee, Randolph County (now Cleburne Co.), AL in 1832. Arbacoochee was named after the old Creek Indian village of "Abihkuchi", which translates to "a pile at the base." The local mines produced over $5,000,000 worth of gold. At its zenith, about 1845, Arbacoochee had a population of about 5000 with most of the residents living in either tents or shacks and was home to twenty general stores, five saloons including the largest one in Alabama, a school, two churches, two hotels, two mining supply stores, a fire department, race track, and over 100 permanent homes until 1849 when gold was discovered in California. Then most of the residents moved west with hopes of "striking it rich" in "more promising fields". Only a few residents remained until the out break of the War Between the States in 1861. Isaac developed the gold fever at some point and sometime between 1851-1854, Isaac, Nancy Jane and their children moved from Benton County to adjacent Arbacoochee, Randolph County, now Cleburne County, to mine gold. Their youngest child, Isaac Franklin Abercrombie, was born at Arbacoochee on 25 Sep 1854.

The 1850 US Census of Benton Co., AL enumerated the household of 38 Y/O Isaac Crumby (Abercrombie), a farmer born in South Carolina, and his 31 Y/O wife, Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie, born in GA. Also living in the household were their children: 11 Y/O William Robert Abercrombie; 9 Y/O Henry Monroe Abercrombie; 6 Y/O James Witt Abercrombie and 2 Y/O Mary Elizabeth Abercrombie.

In the late summer of 1855, Isaac (the father) journeyed to St. Clair, County where he bought a farm on Wolf Creek Road about 5 miles south of Eden, AL. On his return trip home to Arbacoochee, he contracted pneumonia. After reaching home, he died on 23 Sep 1855 and was buried at Arbacoochee, AL. Before he died he gave Nancy Jane the deed and location of the farm. She gathered her children and belongings and moved to their new home in St. Clair County. Nancy Jane and her children farmed at Wolf Creek from the fall of 1855 until sometime after the close of the Civil War (1865). Isaac Franklin Abercrombie grew up on the farm on Wolf Creek Road in St. Clair Co. AL.

The 1860 US Census of Branchville (near Wolf Creek), St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 41 Y/O widowed Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie, born in GA. Also living in the household were her children: 19 Y/O Henry M. Abercrombie; 16 Y/O James W. Abercrombie; 12 Y/O Mary E. Abercrombie; 9 Y/O John P. Abercrombie and 5 Y/O Isaac Franklin Abercrombie.

The 1870 US Census of Kelley Creek, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of 51 Y/O widowed Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie. Living in the household was her son, 16 Y/O Isaac Franklin Abercrombie, a farm hand. Also residing in the household was her daughter, 21 Y/O Mary E. (Abercrombie) Dicus and her 2 Y/O son, Henry E. Dicus.
NOTE: Living in the household next door was 27 Y/O James Witt Abercrombie and his family. James was a son of Isaac and Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie.

Isaac Franklin Abercrombie was enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses of St. Clair Co., AL living with his mother in the old homestead on Wolf Creek Road as indicated above. Isaac married Martha Abigail "Mollie" Thunderburk, (d/o Jake Thunderburk born in N. C.) in 1871 at St. Clair, Co., AL. Mollie Thunderburk was born on 26 May 1856 in Georgia and died on 09 Sep 1937 in McNairy Co., TN.

The 1880 US census of Dunlap, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated 26 Y/O Isaac Franklin Abercrombie owning his own farm. He and his 23 Y/O wife, Mollie, had 3 children living in the household: 6 Y/O Nancy Jane Abercrombie; 4 Y/O Martha Ann Abercrombie and 1 Y/O Joseph M. Abercrombie. Also living in the household was Isaac's widowed mother, 60 Y/O Nancy Jane (Dowdy) Abercrombie.

Judging from the progressive birth places and birth dates of their children, Isaac and his family remained in St. Clair Co., AL until November 1888, the birth date and place of their son, James Harrison Abercrombie, and moved to McNairy Co., TN (southern Tennessee) prior to 09 May 1896, the birth date and birth place of their daughter, Fannie F. Abercrombie.

The 1900 US Census of McNairy Co., TN enumerated the household of 46 Y/O Isaac F. Abercrombie, a farmer born in AL, and his 44 Y/O wife, Martha Abigail "Mollie" (Thunderburk) Abercrombie, born in GA. Also in the household were their children: 19 Y/O Joseph M. Abercrombie, a farm laborer born in AL; 16 Y/O Ella Abercrombie, a farm laborer born in AL; 11 Y/O James Harrison Abercrombie, a farm laborer born in AL, and 4 Y/O Fannie F. Abercrombie, born in Tennessee. NOTE: Living next door was the household of 26 Y/O Joel D. Smith, a farmer born in AL, and his 22 Y/O wife, Martha Ann (Abercrombie) Smith. Martha was a daughter of Isaac Franklin Abercrombie and Martha Abigail (Thunderburk) Abercrombie.

The 1910 US Census of Civil District 9, of McNairy Co., TN enumerated the household of 56 Y/O Isaac Abercrombie, a farmer, and his 54 Y/O wife, "Molsie A." (Martha Abigail "Mollie" (Thunderburk) Abercrombie. Also residing in the household were their children: Joseph M. Abercrombie, a farm laborer; 14 Y/O Fannie F. Abercrombie, a farm laborer and 6 Y/O Delsie M. Abercrombie.

The 1920 US Census of Civil District 9, of McNairy Co., TN enumerated the household of 65 Y/O Isaac Abercrombie, a farmer, and his 63 Y/O wife, Abigail Abercrombie. Their 38 Y/O unmarried son, Joseph M. Abercrombie, was still living in the household and was working as a farm laborer.

Following the 17 Mar 1929 death of Isaac Franklin Abercrombie, the April 1930 US Census in District 9, NcNairy Co., TN enumerated the household of his son, 49 Y/O unmarried Joseph M. Abercrombie, a farmer. Also living in the household was his 72 Y/O widowed mother, Martha Abigail Abercrombie. Joseph M. Abercrombie died on 08 July 1930 probably from a stroke.
