U.S, Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1850, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Rockland, Maine, in 1853. He was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1861-62, 67), Mayor of Lewiston Maine, (1866-67) and Attorney General of State of Maine, (1867-69). In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1881. After his final term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, in 1881 and served until his death at age 80.
