U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, commenced to practice law in Bowdoinham, Maine and engaged in mercantile pursuits, (1814-18). He was also member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1819, a member of the convention which formed the first constitution of the State of Maine, in 1820 and secretary of the Maine State Senate in 1821. In 1821, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress and elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving until 1827. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he served as a member of the Maine State Senate until his death.
