Maine Governor. He attended Monmouth Academy, graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1836, attended Dartmouth Medical School, graduated from Medical College of Ohio, in 1839 and established a successful medical career in Lewiston, Maine. Entering politics, he was a member of the Maine State Senate, (1855-56) and a member of the Maine House of Representatives, (1857-58). During the Civil War, he served as the Surgeon General of Maine. He was Mayor of Lewiston, in 1871 and elected as a Democrat the 36th Governor of Maine, serving (1879-80). During his tenure, he administered the executive office and guided state transactions with sound judgment and political discretion. After leaving office, he resumed the practice of medicine and became involved in the American Medical Association. He died in retirement at age 93.
