MASSENA - Mrs. Donalda M. Simser, 89, of 38 Martin Street, died Monday (March 24, 2008) afternoon at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been patient since March 18. She had recently been a resident at the St. Regis Nursing Home for rehabilitation. She was born October 23, 1918 in Norwood, the daughter of Edward A. and Mary Galbriath Empey. She graduated from Massena High School in 1938, and attended nursing school. She married Robert Riley Simser on December 1, 1946 at St. John's Episcopal Church. He predeceased her on December 23, 1997. While she was in high school, she worked at Waukesha, an exclusive resort for the rich in Tupper Lake. During the war, she worked at Alcoa. She then left Alcoa to work for the A&P, where she was the manager for many years. She and her husband also owned the Town Pub in Piercefield from 1971 until 1981. She also worked with the Welcome Wagon and with the USO during the war. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed bowling, having belonged to many leagues, reading, and sitting on her porch. She also enjoyed traveling through the New England States and also enjoyed many summers at their cottage in Star Lake. She is survived by her twin daughters, Debra and Diane Simser, Massena; her sister and brother-in-law, Eva and Haile North, Conifer, NY; her sister-in-law, Jane Hazel, Brasher Falls; and her nieces. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward A. Empey on March 14, 1970. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Thursday 2:00 PM with Deacon Rick Littlejohn, of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be later in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
