Mayor of Cincinnati, Attorney. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Henry Thomas Hunt graduated from Yale College in 1900. He returned to Cincinnati and earned a law degree from the Cincinnati Law School in 1903 and practiced as an attorney in Hamilton County, Ohio. In 1906, Hunt won an indictment in a notable case against Cincinnati's corrupt political leader, George "Boss" Cox. Cox later escaped conviction. Elected to the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1907, he directed an assault against the Cox Machine and succeeded in having the state investigate Cox which revealed that several of the Boss's henchmen had been collecting interest from public funds. Elected as a Reform Democrat in 1911, Hunt became the Mayor of Cincinnati and served from 1912 to 1913. Referred to as the "Boy Mayor", his term in office targeted corruption and began the end for the Cox Machine. As Mayor, he also strengthened Civil Service in municipal positions and instituted a number of other reforms. Hunt was unsuccessful as a candidate for reelection when Cox marshaled all of his forces to defeat the incumbent. Disappointed that his reforms were dismantled, Hunt left Cincinnati the following year and became a prominent lawyer in New York. He later moved to Washington D.C. and resumed his law profession until his death in 1956.
