Frank William Novotny, Miller, died Mar 18, 2011, in a care center at Miller. He was the father of Michael Novotny of Rosholt.
He was born at home to Otto and Emma (Chudoba) Novotny in Como Township, Hand County, Dec 18, 1919, the eighth of nine children. He and his brother, Edward worked as hired ranch hands for the Fawcett brothers in the late 1930s until WWII, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was sent to Fort Ord in California, Scofield Barracks in Hawaii and finally to England, France and Germany, where he served with the 864th Ordnance. He was discharged in the fall of 1945 and returned to South Dakota.
He married Thelma Johanna Fawcett May 19, 1946, in the Cedar Congregational Church. He was primarily a rancher and farmer, but also had a passion for carpentry. In 1970, he designed and built his family a new home. He lost part of a finger to a saw which resulted in a stub that he enjoyed showing to children. He retired in 1980, but they continued to live on the farm until 1992, and then moved to Miller. After retirement, he built many decks and sheds and kept busy with other odd carpentry jobs until well into his 80s.
He was a member and trustee of the Cedar UCC Church until its closing in 1978, then joined the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, where he also served as a trustee. He enjoyed his family, tinkering and keeping busy.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Steven, who died in 1959.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Thelma (Fawcett) Novotny of Miller; his children, Michael (Karen) Novotny of Rosholt, Julie and Jane Novotny of Sioux Falls and Joseph (Carrie) Novotny of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
