Pearlie’s cremated remains were not initally taken after his death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. More information is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/amh/osh/pages/cremains.aspx A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

At least by December 2018 his name was no longer on the list of unclaimed cremains.

Pearlie was born in 1895 in Oregon. His father, Adolphus Brant, a farmer, was born in California in 1864 and his mother, Emily Ellen "Nellie" Hooker, was born in Oregon in 1870. They were married about 1890. Nellie's sister , Olive, married Adolphus' brother, Charles.

By 1900 Nellie had 4 children with 2 (Pearlie and his older sister, Cyrena) being alive in 1900. In 1908 at the age of 15, Cyrena died of chronic heart disease related to having had diptheria. By the 1910 census Pearlie’s mother reported having had 11 children with two being alive at that time - Pearlie and his younger brother Neal Olen (born in 1915 in Oregon). In addition to Cyrena there are at least 6 Brant children buried at the Woodbine Cemetery in Rainier, Columbia County, Oregon including Anna (1891-1892), Percy (1896-1898), Crystal (b. about 1901), and 4 infants.

During the census of 1900 the family was living in Rainier, Oregon. Pearlie was 5 years old and not yet going to school. His father was a farmer.

In the census of 1910 the family was still in Rainier where Pearlie was said to be attending school at 15 and was reportedly able to read and write. His father was a sawyer in a door factory.

In 1917 when his World War I draft registration was completed Pearlie was 22, single, living in Rainier, Oregon and not employed. A note indicated he was “absolutely unfit for military service” and that he had “spinal and nervous trouble.” He was able to sign his name legibly, but it was clearly labored.

At the time of the 1920 census, Pearlie, his parents and brother Neal were living in North Bend, Coos County on the southern Oregon coast. It was noted that Pearlie was “afflicted.” At 24 he could reportedly read, write and speak. His father was a saw filer in the ship yard.

Four months after moving to Linn County, Oregon, Adolphus Brant died of heart and kidney disease in January 1926. He had been a grocer.

During the 1930 census Pearlie was living with his widowed mother who was now a minister for the Northwest Charity Association of the Church of God in Santiam, Linn County, Oregon, a group with which she had worked since 1913. The 1930 census indicated that at 35 Pearlie could not read, write or speak English. His brother Neal was a baker living in Astoria, Oregon with his wife and family. On 7/29/1931 Pearlie’s mother, Nellie, died of breast cancer at her home in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. She was 61.

At least by 1935 Pearlie had been admitted to the Oregon Fairview Home in Salem, Oregon. This was originally the Oregon State Institution for the Feeble-Minded, a residential, quasi-educational institution charged with educating people with developmental disabilities. In 1933 the facility was renamed Oregon Fairview Home and it was closed in 2000. Pearlie was listed in the 1940 census as a “inmate” at the institution. He died at the institution on 4/7/1965 at the age of 70.

By 1935 Neal had moved to North Bend where he continued to work as a baker. He died in 1978 in California (FAG memorial 3555015).

This researcher is unable to find more information about Pearl until his death certificate is open to the public at the Oregon State Archives in January 2016.
