Cartes Smoker Horning, 97, formerly of 611 S. Wayne St., Lewistown, died at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at the Ohesson Manor Nursing Home.

Born on Oct. 6, 1911, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Boyer) Smoker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Leroy Horning Sr., on Oct. 29, 2002.

Daughters surviving: Jane Zook and her companion, Charles "Yogi" Laub, of Lewistown, and Mary Jo Johnson and her husband, Terry, of Fishers, Ind.; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by: sisters, Priscella Bailey, of Virginia, and Phyllis Ellis and her husband, Eugene, of Baldwinsville, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by a son, Samuel L. "Goose" Horning, on Dec. 10, 2001; a brother, Samuel Smoker; and three sisters, Sue E. Hummel, Margaret Smoker and Marian Cummings.

She graduated from Lewistown High School in 1929 and was an accomplished basketball player for the YMCA team.

She started to work as a bookkeeper at the Russell National Bank and helped institute the school savings account program.

She was active in the 7th Ward PTA, serving in many capacities. She was also in charge of the County PTA Roundtable and had a weekly radio program at WMRF.

She was selected as Mother of the Year in the late 1940s.

She was a very active member of the Grove Memorial United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed working at the church with the bake sales, soup sales and especially her Sunday school class rummage sales.

Years ago, she made the Chrismons for the church, along with the help of her Sunday school classmates, and the church is still using them.

She was an accomplished tailor and seamstress making most of her children's clothes.

Cartes didn't learn to drive until she was 62 years old and then she and Sam would enjoy traveling the countryside.

Her funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the Ohesson Manor Chapel, 276 Green Ave., Lewistown, with Pastor Mike Sigler and Pastor Mike Bailey officiating. Interment was in Juniata Memorial Park.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the chapel.
