William Orland Bourne, was well known writer and the former registrar of the New York Free Academy which provided children of immigrants and the poor access to free higher education based on academic merit alone. Among his books were: "Gems From Fableland," "Golden Links," "Little Silver Spring," "Poems of the Republic," and "The History of New York Public School Society." He established and edited the Soldier Friend, which was a monthly newspaper filled with inspirational poems and stories as an aid to disabled volunteers during and after the civil war. He was given the title of the "Poet of Freedom." He was one of the earliest proponents of the Republican Party.
