U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents to Seattle, Washington, 1872 and thence to San Francisco, California, in 1873. There he became successful in the cattle, lumber and mining businesses and was a member of the California State Assembly, (1887-88). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1888, was superintendent of Station B post office, San Francisco, (1890-94) and clerk of San Francisco City and County, (1894-98). He also was California State Secretary, (1899-1910), building and loan commissioner of California in 1911 and a representative to the Panama Pacific International Exposition for the Pacific Coast and Intermountain States, in 1911. In 1913, he was elected as a Republican, to the Sixty-third Congress and to the eight succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 72.
