US Congressman. He was elected as an Anti-Lecompton Democrat to represent Pennsylvania's 8th District in the Thirty-Sixth Congress, and served from March 1859 to until his death. Schwartz was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He received a rudimentary education and at age 10 was apprenticed to a merchant in Reading, with whom he became a partner after his training was complete. Schwartz served a major during the War of 1812 and then devoted himself to a successful business maunfacturing iron products. His 15 months in the US House of Representatives marked his only time in public office. He died in Washington, DC, where there is a cenotaph for him at Congressional Cemetery.
