A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty in York County November 8, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 10 as a private with Co. D, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863, in York.
In 1870, he was living in West Manchester Township, York County. Lovina died in 1874, and he married Emaline Ann Gruver November 13, 1875. Cause of his death is listed as "acute bronchitis" with "insufficiency of mitral valves from structural disease of heart" a contributing factor.
