Bessie W. Edlund, 95, a resident of Hoquiam for more than 50 years, died Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Roo-Lan Healthcare Center in Lacey, Wash.
Mary Elizabeth “Bessie” was born in Maryville, Mo., July 9, 1910, to Scottish immigrants, William James and Margaret (Beattie) Wight.
Her early years were spent in Missouri, Hawaii, and Alabama, where her father worked as a ranch manager. She graduated high school in Fort Deposit, Ala., and attended the University of Alabama for two years before moving with her family to Toledo, Wash., in 1931. she completed her education in 1934, earning her teaching certification at Bellingham Normal School (Now Western Washington University.)
Bessie began her teaching career in Toledo, where she taught seventh and eighth grade. It was there she met J. Gordon Edlund, who came to teach English and music at Toledo High School. Bessie and Gordon were married in December of 1940, in the living room of her parents’ home in Toledo. They moved to Shelton in 1943, and to Montesano in 1944, before settling in Hoquiam in 1946.
After taking time out to raise her family, Bessie returned to teaching in 1950. She taught fourth grade at Central Elementary School in Hoquiam until her retirement in 1973. She and Gordon taveleled extensively after their retirement, visiting every continent except Antarctica.
In Hoquiam, Bessie was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She belonged to the American Association of University Women and PEO. A gracious hostess, homemaker, and a fine cook, she and Gordon often opened their home to large groups of friends for memorable dinner parties.
She is survived by her two sons, Ian Edlund (Marjorie) of Olympia, and Eric Edlund (Ann) of Redmond, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, sisters, Margaret Schafer and Nellie Zundel, and brother, William Wight.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., at The First Presbyterian Church in Hoquiam Saturday, May 27, 2006.
