Dorothea was born in Vadersdorf, Germany to Jurgen and Katherine (Olsen) Wendel. At the age of fifteen, Dorothea came to America and settled at Gladbrook, IA. Later, she moved to Superior, IA, where she married James Hass on March 15, 1905. Dr. C. L. Stoddard, mayor of Spirit Lake, IA, performed the ceremony.
In 1907, Dorothy and her husband moved to a farm two miles south of Hawarden, IA. In 1909, the couple purchased a farm eight miles northeast of Hawarden, IA and spent the next thirty years living there. They raised two sons, Lee and Harold. Dorothea and her husband moved to Hawarden in November of 1939.
Dorothea died at home in Hawarden, IA. She was survived by her husband and one son, Harold.
