In 1907, the James and his wife farmed two miles south of Hawarden, IA. In 1909, they purchased a 160 acre farm northeast of Hawarden, IA and spent the next 30 years living there and raising their two sons, Lee and Harold. From 1929 to 1932, they endured dust storms. In 1930, the James and his wife purchased a 160 acre farm east of their place. James retired and moved with his wife to Hawarden, IA in November of 1939.
James died in the hospital in Hawarden, IA. He was survived by his son, Harold. His wife and his son, Lee, preceeded him in death.
