Lula Mae Yandell was born January 31, 1886, the first of three daughters born to Charles Hay and Rebecca Frances Nave Yandell. After attending the Cherokee Women's Seminary at Tahlequah, she taught school at Lee's Creek for one term before marrying Alfred L. Tinney on January 1, 1907. After moving around Oklahoma for a bit the Tinneys made their home in Checotah.

Mae was a talented seamstress and gardener. Stories are told of how she could be shown a picture of a dress in a catalog and then she could turn out one just like it. She and Alfred raised nine children - eight of their own plus the son of Mae's sister, Bessie, who had died of influenza. Mae was a member of the church of Christ.

Alfred preceded her in death in January of 1970. Survivors at the time of her passing included three sons: Ernest, Earl, and John; four daughters: Mrs. Edith Pugh, Mrs. Goldie Kane, Mrs. Imogene Humpreys, and Mrs. Lois Burley. Also one sister, Katherine Tinney of Sallisaw. She was survived by thirteen grandchildren.
