According to U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, found on Ancestry.com, Edward Barnum, a resident of Sheffield, Massachusetts, aged 18 and a farmer, enlisted as a Private on December 17, 1863. He survived the War, but was wounded in the chest at the Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. He enlisted in Company C, Massachusetts 37th Infantry Regiment on December 17, 1863. He mustered out on June 19, 1865. He transferred to Company C, Massachusetts 20th Infantry Regiment on June 19, 1865 , and mustered out on July 16, 1865 at Washington D.C. Evidently, he must have lied about his age when signing up for military service, as he was born in 1848, and would have only been 15 at the time of his enlistment. He was the son of William Orson and Effie Marie Snyder Barnum. According to his death record, he died of Carcinoma of the larynx, with malnutrition as a contributory factor in his death, at the age of 59.
