CARUTHERS
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main St., Irwin, for Carroll Caruthers, 78, Caruthers Lane, Irwin RD 4, well-known Westmoreland County attorney. Caruthers died Monday morning in Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla., after suffering a heart attack last Tuesday while vacationing at his new winter home at Cape Coral, Fla. One of the oldest active attorneys in Westmoreland County, he practiced law for more than 50 years. He was graduated from Irwin High School, Bucknell University, Class of 1904 and University of Michigan Law School in 1906. He was admitted to the bar in Michigan in 1907 and began his practice in the Supreme Court of Illinois, being admitted to the Illinois bar in 1907. In 1913, Caruthers was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar and returned to his native Westmoreland County the following year to assume practice here. He served in the county and state courts, state Superior Court, Western Pennsylvania federal court, circuit court of appeals and Supreme Court of the United States. He was a member of the county, state, and national bar associations. Caruthers was solicitor for Penn Township and was an original member of the board and solicitor for Irwin Savings and Trust Co. For many years he was solicitor for Irwin Borough, handling the borough's affairs during the prolonged litigation over the annexation of the Penglyn area. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Irwin. Caruthers was born in Irwin August 17, 1882, a son of the late William F. and Catherine A. Kenny Caruthers. The Caruthers were pioneers in the Irwin area. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Adell J. Rince Caruthers; one son, attorney William, Irwin; three grandchildren and one brother, John L., Irwin. The son was associated with his father in his law offices in Greensburg and Irwin and is also an assistant district attorney. Friends will be received 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. beginning this evening at Snyder's Funeral Home. His pastor, Rev. E.M. Flanigan, D.D. will officiate at services. Interment will be in Irwin Union Cemetery.
