Susan Ardell (Jimmie) Black Kartchner, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, age 78, of Provo, died July 10, 1996 of heart failure.

Jimmie was born March 10, 1918 to Edwin Zemira and Chloe Allen Black in Blanding, Utah. She married Harvey John Kartchner in the Salt Lake Temple on June 17, 1937.

She graduated from San Juan High School in Blanding, where she lived until 1978, when she moved to Provo, Utah.

Jimmie became a loving care giver for her younger brother and sister at a young age, as her own mother died when she was only 13 years old. She remained a kind and loving care giver to those around her for the remainder of her life. She was an excellent seamstress and took great pride in her work. Many people benefited from this talent. One of her greatest talents was her ability to listen to others without passing judgement or giving unneeded advice. She loved reading and writing poetry. She had a great love of music, particularly church hymns, and enjoyed singing with the Relief Society Singing Sisters. Jimmie was an active member of the LDS Church, and served in various positions in the Sunday School and Primary.

Jimmie is survived by her husband, Harvey John Kartchner; five sons and five daughters; Iris (Leon) Johnson of St. George, Utah; Rex (Kay) Gardner of Provo, Utah; John Zemira (Meredith) Kartchner of Mountain Green, Utah; Pearl Diane (Wayne) Hurst of Orem, Utah; Nancy Chloe (Jim) Butterfield of Pleasant Grove, Utah; Allyn (Jack) Thompson of Sandy, Utah; James Brent (Vicki) Kartchner of Salt Lake City, Utah; Stephanie Kartchner of Orem, Utah; Carlos Whitney (Debbie) Kartchner of Layton, Utah; Bruce McKay (Theone) Kartchner of Sandy, Utah; 60 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister; Allen (Gen) Black and Zelma Black Acton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13, 1996 at 10 a.m. in the Pioneer 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 450 North 1200 West, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Friday evening, from 6:30-8 p.m. or Saturday morning at the Ward Chapel, one hour prior to services.
