Last child of Jon & Vannie Holbrook Pence, she was born just over the state line in Missouri, across the road from where the Lone Elm School once stood.
She attended Maryville State Teacher's College and taught country schools for several years. Her first school was located 9 miles west of Coin, IA and she walked 1 3/4 miles to get there. She had been taught how to build a fire and bank it for morning. During a bad storm the family she stayed with came for her in a wagon and helped her with the fire an close the school house. The school burned down due to a defective flue. She was thankful that someone had helped her with the fire that night or she would have always felt responsible. She then went to Yorktown, IA to teach.
She married Claude Edward Apple on 30 June 1917, in Savannah her grandfathers previous home and town her mother was named after.
Violet and Claude planned their vacations so they could research material in southeaster US, spending their days in libraries and courthouse. Through that and cousins wife of Baton Rouge, LA she shared what she learned and helped publish a Davison/Davidson family book, helping server generations of those families and other connected families research their roots. It was the time living with her mother Vannie after her fathers death that Vannie shared her love of family history and genealogy.
Violet was a resident in the Bethesda Care Center in Iowa prior to her passing.
They had no children, just lots of family, friends and people who appreciate all the work she did in genealogy.
