Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Diplomat. He served from 1993 to 1997 as United States Secretary of State during the first administration of President Bill Clinton. He previously served as Deputy Attorney General from 1967 to 1969 during President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration, and later as Deputy Secretary of State from 1977 to 1981 during President Jimmy Carter administration. During his service during President Carter's term he helped secure the release of American hostages in Iran, an accomplishment he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for in 1981.
