Inventor. Born in Hanover, Germany, he was an electrical engineer credited with many innovations in electric power and related fields. He was notable in electronic optics as the inventor of the electron microscope and holds patents for many electric power generator system devices. He was head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, Harvard from 1939 to 1952, when he retired.
