Born of parents [James Baxter Hail & Mary Elizabeth Rohrer Hail] who were Cumberland Presbyterian missionaries. A graduate of Missouri Valley College in 1899.
He taught English at the Japanese Imperial Naval Academy. Returned to attend Yale University for graduate studies. There earning a Bachelor of Divinity degree, a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in History. Returned to the orient in 1907 with his bride, Alice Inghram Hail*, to Changsha, China as Dean of Yale-in-China. All 4 of their childern [Elisabeth Inghram {Tibby} Quinby* 1915-1974, twins Alicia Gordon Fabens* {1917-1996} & Rebekahmary Jordan* {1917-2000}, and William James{1922-}] were born in China. They remained there until 1926 when exspelled by the Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek.
Returned to the US and settled in Wooster Ohio, where Dr. Hail was chairman of the History Department at the College Of Wooster.
In the early 1900's Dr. Hail was the intercollegiate 2-mile track champion, his time of 9:49 was a record that stood for a quarter of a century. He also won his speciality at the Penn Relays.
