Mr. Prout in the early 1930's built the Prout Building at the corner of Glenway Avenue and Cleves-Warsaw Pike, which gave the intersection its name. He once operated a restaurant and later, a real estate agency in the building. A former president of the Price Hill Businessmen's club, he had been retired for 10 years. He was survived by Mary Virginia Prout Berndsen and Miss Florence Prout. He was 73.

Mr. Prout's Father was William (Billy) Prout who was murdered in August of 1888 by Thomas J. McNamara when John was 2 years old. Mr. Prout's Mother was Annie Moore Prout. Both parents came from Ireland. He had three siblings : Mary who died of diptheria at one year of age (Oct 1872), and two older brothers Thomas (1874-1913) and William (1876-1939). John was the youngest in the family. All of the family are buried together in St. Joseph's New Cemetery.
