Virgil graduated at Willamette University in 1867.
Virgil, as a young man, clerked for Floed & Co. in Roseburg, Oregon. He worked at this establishment for eleven years until he opened his own store in Paisley, Lake Co., Oregon in 1882.
Virgil married Mary Frances Long in 1880. Mary was born May 1860 in Iowa. They are living in Deer Creek Township (Roseburg), Douglas Co., Oregon where Virgil is working as a dry goods merchant.
He was an active Republican for years. In 1895 he was elected to the legislature against a previously successful Democrat in Klamath and Lake Counties.
June 1900 finds Virgil and his family in Paisley. Daughters Vera A. was born Sept. 1889 and Velma C. was born March 1893, both in Oregon. Mary F. had 4 births, but only two living children.
Brothers George and Frank are also living in Paisley in 1900.
Virgil and his family are still living in Paisley, Oregon at the time of the 1910 U.S. Census.
Virgil and Mary, along with daughter Vera are living in Lake Co., Oregon in 1920. Virgil is 72, Mary is 60 and Vera is 29.
