Mary Kathyleen McOmber 11/25/28~11/28/02

Mary Kathyleen Merkley Ahrnsbrak McOmber, age 74, passed away at her home with her family around her on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2002, from complications of congestive heart failure.

She was born November 25, 1928, in Vernal, UT to Asher and Birda Lewis Merkley.

She marred Arnold Rossell Ahrnsbrak on June 7, 1947. They had two sons, David R. Ahrnsbrak, of Vernal, and an infant son, Nelson, who died shortly after birth.

She married Arthur F. McOmber May 24, 1979 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He passed away Dec. 31, 1999.

Kathy graduated from Uintah High School in 1947, She was exceptional in the Drama Club and won several awards for plays and readings.

She was a member of the LDS Church and served in many positions including: Relief Society president, Relief Society teacher, Primary counselor, Sunday School teacher, Chorister, and Road Show director.

She lived in many places including: Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Japan, and Spain, as well as Vernal. She had a remarkable memory. She loved the arts and history and kept many historical records of family members and shared them with others.

In spite of her ongoing battles with health she always had a sparkle in her eye and a contagious quest for knowledge and learning. She always managed to uplift and inspire the best from those who came in contact with her. She was a caring person who loved and was loved by all who knew her.

She was particularly close to her son David and his wife, Laura, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A special thanks to Uintah Basin Hospice, Kay Hunting, Sylvia Lind, Rose Knop, and Dr. Madsen for their tender care. Also special friends, neighbors, visiting teachers, bishops, and Relief Society presidents who were kind to her during the many years she was ill.

Kathy is survived by her son David R. Ahrnsbrak, his wife Laura, and their four children: Nelson, Christina Hinckley (Derek), Dallin, and Patrick. Stepchildren: Arthur F. McOmber, Jr (Diana), Howard J. McOmber (Liz), and Susan McOmber Lemmons, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brothers: Douglas L. Merkley (Rhea), of Heber City, and Bryce A. Merkley (Merlene) of Salt Lake City.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Nelson, her parents and her sister Virginia Hacking Giles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 3, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ashley Stake Center.

Friends may call on Monday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Spafford Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. at the chapel.

Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park under direction of the Spafford Funeral Home.
