The Washington Star

Miss Sarah Elizabeth Brown, better known in Upper Montgomery County as Miss Sallie, died Friday in a Kensington (Md.) nursing home. She was 98.

She had spent the last four years of her life trying to regain her strength from a broken hip so she could return to her native Barnesville, Md.

Miss Sallie used to say she remembered things about the Civil War, which began when she was four. She said Barnesville changed hands five times one day.

She used to tell how the soldiers stopped for a drink, some with their shoes gone and feet bleeding. Her mother gave them shoes, socks and clothes.

She also remembered the day Lincoln was assassinated, and that somebody came along and said, "Oh, Sallie! We're done! We're done!"

Miss Sallie was noted for her fine handiwork. She had worked with her needle as long as she could remember. Her proudest effort was working the Norwegian coat of arms on a hanging 36 by 46 inches.

Miss Sallie never married. She cared for her mother until the latter died in her 100th year. Her father died when he was 87. Her closest relatives are nieces and nephews, including Hatton D. Brown, Barnesville.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Hilton funeral home in Barnesville. Burial will be in Monocacy Cemetery.
