Hartnett, William J. Jr. age 58, suddenly, on March 12, 2011. Beloved father of William J. Hartnett, III and the late Evan Newell Hartnett; dear brother of Joseph (Barbara) Hartnett, Kathleen (Thomas) Belanger, Michael (Carmen) Hartnett, John (Sara) Hartnett, Mary (Richard Norland) Hartnett, and Stephen Hartnett; dear nephew of Pat and Emily "Pinky" (Hannefin) Dolan and William Fuchs; dear nephew-in-law of Agnes Ruyle and Blanche (Ruyle) Peterson; good friend of Harry and Connie (Ruyle) Abeln; dear godfather of Elizabeth Lypp, dear uncle, cousin, friend and colleague. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Kathleen (Hannefin) Hartnett, and by his parents-in-law, James and Marjorie (Newell) Ruyle. Bill attended St. Louis University High School and St. Louis University, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Mathematics at Washington University. He later continued his education with a law degree at St. Louis University, a Master's in Technology & Policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Master's in Humanities and Social Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He earned his Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies and Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1996 with his thesis "The Pursuit of Sustainable Development as a Duty of States under International Law". Beginning his early career as a forecaster and researcher at Weather Corporation of America, his father's business, Bill then continued in a series of jobs relating to weather, energy conservation and computer science. In Chicago, his focus shifted to finance and economics. Over decades, he was a member of major financial exchanges in Chicago, Paris, London, Frankfurt and Dublin. His direct experience in these markets provided a foundation for his later research and development of new policies in equitable privatization and sustainable development. Bill's vision continued to expand, including studies with the Hague Academy of International Law and the International Institute of Human Rights. As a research fellow and visiting scholar at Trinity College Dublin, INSEAD, the MIT Sloan School and the National University of Ireland in Galway, he wrote papers and established patents with the goal of creating policies for peace and prosperity through sustainable development, social justice and genuine collaboration. His work culminated with "A Collaborative Development Zone for Israelis and Palestinians". Beyond work, Bill generously used his tremendous intellect and talents to contribute as a volunteer though organizations like SOS Children's Villages, the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva, Switzerland, and the National Environmental Law Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bill is loved and will be dearly missed for his thoughtfulness, insight, generosity and his genuine drive to help people even before himself. He lived simply, respected and believed in others, and put his caring into practice every day.
