John Daynne Afton passed peacefully away at Wesley Medical Center,Wichita,KS, on Saturday Aug 11,2012.
He was born in Bruno Township,Butler County on March 21,1924.
He graduated from Benton High School in 1942.In 1943-46 he proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy.He served on the USS Hamlin and recieved battle stars for Iwo Jima,Guam and Okinawa.He served in Tokyo during the signing of the peace treaty in 1945.
He retired from Coleman Company as a Maintenance Technician after 43 years of employment.He also repaired televisions in his spare time.In 1954 he received a Television Technicians diploma from United Television Laboratories,Louisville,KY,through the G.I.Bill.
He was a member of River Walk Church of Christ,and a lifetime member of both the American Legion and the V.F.W.
He had also served as mayor for the city of Benton.
He was united in marriage to Corrine(Latta) on Sept.3,1948.She survives,and next month would have marked their 64th wedding anniversary.He also leaves behind three children:Alan and his wife Marlene of Baton Rouge,LA;Judith Robben of Wichita and Michael and wife Janice of Park City;seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother Bettie Smith Afton and his sister Louise Harrison.
Graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Benton Cemetery.Viewing wil be from 1-5p.m. Tuesday at Lamb Funeral Home.Memorial fund is established for River Walk Church of Christ in care of the funeral home.
