Paula Dare Roberts Baker (1926 - 2011)

Paula Dare Roberts Baker, 84, retired educator, entered rest Saturday, March 12, 2011. Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Baker Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1050 East Rosedale. The Rev. Walter R. McDonald, pastor, will officiate. Burial: Skyvue Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at historic Baker Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Paula suggested donations to the Building Fund or Music Academy at Baker Chapel AME Church, 1050 E. Humbolt, Fort Worth, Texas 76104.

Paula Dare Roberts Baker was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Red Bird, Okla., to William Dee Roberts and Hettie Virginia Burns Roberts. She studied at Huston-Tillotson College and earned degrees at West Virginia State University, University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. Paula was an elementary teacher and speech therapist for the Fort Worth Independent School District for more than 30 years. In addition, she was a librarian for Tarrant County College and later worked as a bookkeeper and board secretary-treasurer for Baker Funeral Home, Inc. She was a member of the Board of Directors for Child Protective Services of Tarrant County, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Progressive Literary and Arts Club, Bunche-Ellington Club, and Historic Carver Heights Neighborhood Association. A longtime member of Baker Chapel AME Church, Paula had served as a trustee, a commissioner of the Christian Education Commission, teacher of the Helen Wagner Bible Class in the Church School, member of the Daughters of Baker, Corine Griffin Women's Missionary Society and Noonday Prayer and Bible Study groups. A kind and generous woman, Paula loved children and was an advocate for them throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jacquelyn Diane Baker; parents; and sister, Helen Dixon.

Survivors: Her son, James Nathan Charles Baker; daughter, Janice Annette Baker Offutt (Gerald); special daughter, Jacquelyn Meeks; special sister, Catherine Christian; several generations of cousins, nephews and nieces; and many other family members and friends.
