Biography courtesy of Dennis Brandt:

Born 2 June 1838, Asa Ferdinand Mather was the son of George William and Elvira Warren Mather and stepson of Maria Mather. In 1850 he lived with the Harvey Sanford family in Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont, and while absent from the 1860 census, he likely still lived in or about Rutland County. A farmer by trade, he was also listed as a teamster, and he stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into Federal service at Fair Haven, Rutland County, on 1 September 1862, as a private with Battery C, 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery. Promoted to corporal shortly afterward, he was promoted to sergeant 30 October 1863, and to quartermaster sergeant of the regiment to date 28 December 1863. Furloughed March 1865, the army charged him $19.60 for transportation, and he was frequently in hock to the regimental sutler. Although promoted to 2nd lieutenant to date 13 May 1865, he did not muster at the rank and honorably discharged with his company 24 June 1865.

He married Julia Isabelle Hoffman (7 December 1847-15 April 1881) on 29 July 1868, and with her fathered Warren Emmett Mather (22 July 1869-11 January 1932), Frederick Henry Mather (12 January 1871-21 August 1914), Mary J. Mather Jacobs (September 1873-8 February 1955), George Hoffman Mather (16 May 1878-1956), and Emily C. Mather (June 1880-21 October 1959).

After the death of his first wife, Asa married Almira Wilson (24 December 1853-13 January 1919) in 1882 in Perry County, Pennsylvania, and with her fathered the following children: Myrtle Alice Mather Bistline (1 April 1883-5 June 1935), James Edgar Mather (15 March 1885-15 May 1973), Harvey Wilson Mather (5 February 1887-2 October 1963), Asa Ferdinand Mather, Jr. (7 May 1889-17 January 1942), and Lucia Evelyn Mather Sweger (8 May 1891-1 November 1931).

Asa died in Tuscarora Township, Perry County, on 10 November 1925 from "senility."
