The Whitney Messenger, Whitney, Texas - September 11, 1970 - "L. W. (Pete) Harris, Lifetime Citizen, Final Rites Sunday - L.W. (Pete)Harris, life-time resident of Hill County, passed away at Whitney Hospital at 4:15 a.m. Friday, September 4.
Mr. Harris was a former Hill County State Representative and Hill County Tax Assessor-Collector.
Funeral services were held a 2 p.m. Sunday from Marshall and Marshall Chapel, Whitney. Reverends Bill Ryan, Bill McCown and Joe Stevens officiated. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, with Masonic graveside services.
Mr. Harris was born in Whitney, son of the late Oliver Douglas Harris and Karon Josephine Puckett Harris, early settlers of Hill County. He graduated from Whitney High School, attended various schools for short courses including Central Cavalry Officers Training School at Camp Stanley, Leo Springs, where he graduated as a First Lieutenant.
Mr. Harris served as a member of the Texas Legislature, 38th, 47th and 48th Session, and co-sponsored bills creating the M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital and Research Laboratory; aid to the first municipal Junior College; creation of Texas Tech Institute.
He was a licensed Public Accountant, Director of Texas Fox and Wolf Hunters Association, member of the Whitney City Council and Whitney Chamber of Commerce. For many years, he served as Democratic Precinct Chairman. In 1961 he was awarded a plaque as "Sportsman of the Year" by members of the Texas Fox and Wolf Hunters Association. He was also named an honorary life member of the Texas Tax Collector-Assessor Association.
He was a member of the Baptist Church, Whitney Masonic Orders and Dallas Scottish Rite Consistory. His activities also included membership on the Hill County Historical Survey Committee. he retired from the State Board of insurance Commission in 1958.
Mr. Harris was married to Kate Hurley Benton in 1914. She passed away three years later and on December 29, 1923 he married Clara Mae Behringer.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Ludd William Harris Jr. of Baytown, Oliver Richard Harris of Aptos, Calif., Robert Doug Harris, Ft. Worth; two daughters, Mrs. Karon Worley of Whitney and Mrs. Margaret DeHart of Norman, Okla.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver P. Harris.
Pallbearers were Gordon Eubank, H. A. Boswell, M.C. (Doc) Bentley, Glenn Morgan, Frank McDonald and Ellis Bailey.
Honorary pallbearers were: Charlie Ford, Allen Burch, Dudley Dodson, Charlie Eubank, Keith Hutto, Robert Allison, R. H. Lambeth, Harley Bain, Manton Turner, Orville Gillispie, John Moore, Joe Bob Boyd, S.S. Nichols, Carroll Golden, L.L. Wilkes, Byron Stoker; Robert Ivy Gage, Charles G. Murrah, R. T. Swilling Jr., H.S. Whigham, Weldon Triplett, Leonard Webb."
