Peter was born to Peter and Regina (Cooper) Lass. At the age of four, he accompanied his parents and siblings to the Garryowen community in Union County, Dakota Territory. After living there for a time, they moved to a homestead in the Emmet community, where he grew up. He purchased his own farm in 1892 and lived there for the next fifty-one years before retirement.

He married Mary McGuire on November 7, 1892 and had three children. Mary died in 1903 and was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery at Emmet. He married Katherine Kennedy on June 21, 1905 and had three more children.

During most of his last year, Peter lived in Beresford, SD. He was survived by his second wife and all six of his children.
