                        This Evening

Through an inquiry from the Minneapolis Journal to its local representative here it became known late Saturday evening that J. E. White, better known as "Pony" White had died on a street car in Minneapolis. He left here that afternoon after a visit of a week at the home of his daughter and with other relatives in this city and the news of his death was a decided shock to all especially to his daughter, Mrs. C. W. McKay. Mr. McKay left on the midnight train for Minneapolis and made arrangements to have the body brought to this city for burial in Evergreen cemetery, where he has two children buried. Mr. Frank White, of Como, a half brother, will arrive this evening with the remains, Mr. McKay having returned home this morning.
The funeral will be held from the residence of C. W. McKay 607 Holly street Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.
James Edward White was born at Tremont, Ill., April 1, 1844. He came to Glencoe, Minn., in 1861 and the rest of his life was spent in Minnesota. He served over three years in the civil war having been a member of Co. A. 1st Minn. Mounted Rangers and afterward of Co. D. 2d Minn. Vol. Cavalry. Mr. White was married in Minneapolis in 1874 to Miss Ella Kimball, who died June 3, 1898. He resided in Brainerd and vicinity until 1896, since which time he has lived in Minneapolis, a portion of the time in the Minnehaha soldiers' home, where he has been continuously for a couple of years.
He leaves one child, Mrs. C. W. McKay, of Brainerd; one own sister, Mrs. Henry Dredge, of Monmouth, Ill.; six half brothers and one half sister- I. U. White, of Brainerd; Wm. S. White, of San Francisco, Cal.; C. B. White of Brainerd; Mrs. Katie Grinnell, of Oakland, Cal.; Frank White, of Como; Henry White, of Gull lake and N. P. White, of Duluth.
Mr. White was well known here in early days having kept a ranch north of Brainerd which was a favorite stopping place with all. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 26 April 1909, p. 2, c's. 4 & 5) [Contributed by John Van Essen]
