His first wife was Martha Spang, whom he married on January 5, 1898 in Farmington, New Mexico. He abandoned her and their five children. The couple were divorced April 4, 1910.

In June 1911 he married Maud Estelle Phillips. After her death, he married Mattie Christine Anderson on August 19, 1935, in Shoshone, Idaho. Their marriage record shows he was using the name John E. Loy at the time. Incredulously, he listed his age as 34, when in fact he was 64--nine years older than her father. She was 20.

Although his obituary said he was 62 when he died, he was actually 82, as he was born in 1871 and not 1891 as stated in the obituary. The obituary correctly listed the names of his two surving sisters who were still alive at that time. His younger sister, Rosa Mae Loy Whittington, was born in 1874 and was three years younger than he. These photographs are from her photo album.
