John P. Nelon was born about 1815. As a child, he resided in both Rutherford County, and the beautiful Cataloochee Valley of Haywood County, NC.

On 22 August 1835, John Nelon married Mary "Polly" Dalton in Rutherford County, NC. (County Court Records Rutherfordton, NC and FHL#:
641851).

His marriage bondsman was Manos H. Dawson.

In 1850, the US Federal Census shows John Nelon, his wife Mary and seven children, residing in District 11, Cocke County, Tenn. The surname is now spelled as Nealon.

1860 US Federal Census shows John, Mary and children living in District 10, Putnam County, Tennessee with Byrne as their postal address.

The 1870 US Federal Census documents their residence still in Putnam County, Tennessee. Two teenage daughters are living at home.

His will was executed 6 November 1876 in Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee, having been written around 21 OCT 1876.
