Big Timber Pioneer, July 27, 1961
Joseph Lavern Sayles, former Sweet Grass county ranch worker, was found dead in the mountains near Norris where he had been tending camp for the Rowe Brothers ranch.
Mr. Sayles was born July 29, 1898, at Buffalo, Wyo. He worked on the ranch of Walter Knudson near Big Timber before going to Ennis and Norris where he was employed by the Rowe brothers. Mr. Sayles was preceded in death by his wife Nov. 28, 1951.
Survivors include a son, Lavern Sayles, stationed with the Air Force at McClennan Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif.; a brother John Sayles of Eugene, Ore,; a half-brother, Ellsworth Verley of Dayton, Wyo, and two sisters; Clara Davidson of Waterville, Ore., and Emma Mathes of Sheridan, Wyo.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Lowry Chapel, with Rev. Christopher Pratt of St Mark's Episcopal church officiating. Mrs. Robert Groom sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Mervin Sell.
Pallbearers were Clarence Rostad, Arthur Algard, Palmer Lomeland, Norman Ammundson of Wilsall, Lloyd Shelhammer of Bozeman, and Hank Rowe of Norris. Interment was in Mountain View.
