During the middle of the seventeenth century there were three "John Greenes" in Rhode Island for ease in identification they have been historically identified as John of Kingston, John of Newport and John of Warwick. John of Warwick is also often referred to as "Surgeon John Greene".

This John Greene is descended from the preceding ["surgeon"]John Greene of Warwick born about 1590 in England and immigrated to MA but soon left for RI due to persecution by the Puritans. His wife was Joanne Tattershall, he died in January 1659 at Warwick RI.

His son Thomas Greene born in England emmigrated with his parents to Warwick, RI. His grandson Nathaniel Greene born at Warwick, RI on 10 Apr. 1679 was a Captain in the Merchant Marines. He married Anne Robinson. His great-grandson Nathaniel Greene born 14 May 1709 in Boston, MA married Elizabeth Taylor.

He was later a merchant in Paramaribo, Guiana, South America where both he and his wife Elizabeth died. This John Greene was born in South America but immigrated to Providence, RI. He next resided at Woodstock, CT and lastly at Stafford, CT.
