Jesse Bartlett

Note: He served as a lieutenant in the mounted volunteers of the 1st Regiment of General Whiteside's brigade in the Black Hawk War, until the brigade was mustered out of service on 28 May 1832 at the mouth of the Fox River in Illinois. He served in the unit with brothers Martin and Nicholas. He moved from the old Bartlett homestead in Madison County, Illinois to Chariton County, Missouri in August 1870. The old Bartlett homestead, where Jesse and his first wife, Nancy Ann, are buried is about four and one-half miles southeast of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. A picture of Jesse, with his signature, appears on page 165 of James Alonzo Matthews, Jr., comp., Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families (Austin, Tex.: Eakin Publications, Inc., 1983).
