Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs from 1993 to 1997. He was a Marine during the Vietnam War and, in 1965, sustained a serious injury in Da Nang that rendered his right arm partially paralyzed. Back stateside, he worked as a national service officer with the organization Disabled American Veterans. In 1988, he became its executive director. In 1993, President-elect Bill Clinton nominated him to be the Veterans Affairs Secretary. Under his leadership, the VA vastly expanded its assistance to homeless veterans, providing services such as employment programs, housing, and psychiatric care. He left the cabinet in July 1997 and spent his remaining years as the executive director of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial Foundation. He died in 2002 at age 58 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, was renamed in his honor in 2004.
