US Congressman. Representative from Pennsylvania’s 16th Congressional District, was born near New Centerville, Somerset County, Pa on July 6, 1833. He attended Somerset Academy and Jefferson College, now Washington and Jefferson College. He was admitted to the bar and began the practice of law in 1855. In 1864 he was elected as a state representative to the state house and served as a delegate to 7 Democratic National Conventions. He also became editor of the newspaper Bedford Gazette but moved to Harrisburg in 1868 to become editor of the Harrisburg Daily Patriot. In 1870 he was elected to the Forty second Congress. He was unsuccessful for reelection in 1872. In 1886 he was appointed as postmaster for Harrisburg and published a small newspaper the Daily Star Independent. He passed away on August 11, 1918.
