U.S. Congressman. Born the son of U.S. Congressman William Stiles Bennet, he graduated from Amherst College Massachusetts, in 1918 and served as a Chief Quartermaster in the U.S. Navy Flying Corps Reserves during World War I, (1918-19). After the war, he graduated from the Columbia University Law School New York City, in 1921 and was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Newburgh, New York. He was a United States Attorney referee in bankruptcy, (1923-44). In 1945, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-ninth Congress. serving until 1947. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he continued to have a successful legal career until his death at age 85.
