Matilda was one of eight children born to Catharine (Knebling) Reynolds and Charles Phillip Frederick Fritz. Charles was born in Stuttgart, Germany. Charles is listed in the 1870 census as living in Pennsylvania after having served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Most of the children of Catharine and Charles were born in Pennsylvania. By 1880, Charles, his wife Catharine, and their children had come to Lincoln County, New Mexico, possibly as early as 1873. The names of Catharine and Charles children were Louise, Emil, Caroline, Clara, Henri, Charles, William, and Mathilde. Charles also had a brother named Emil, and Emil had died on a trip back to Germany in 1874, leaving his ranch in New Mexico without a Will stating who inherited his ranch. Charles began raising cattle on the ranch that was formerly Emil’s. The ranch was called Spring Ranche or simply Spring Ranch and it was located in Lincoln County, New Mexico. As time passed, most of the grown children married, and Matilda married William Charles Reynolds in Watrous, New Mexico in 1891. William Charles took over the operation of a successful mercantile store in Mesilla, New Mexico which had been owned and operated by his Father, Joseph Reynolds and James Edgar Griggs. Joseph had continued operating the mercantile store after the death of his partner, Griggs, in a buggy accident, until turning the business over to William. Matilda and William had seven children. Joseph, Charles, Emil, Paul, John, Therese, Mary, and Henry.
