Tor was the son of Moillie Abramson and Nils Marius Nilsen of Mandal, Norway. He attended Brooklyn Tech and graduated with honors from the City College of NY. He received his MS in 1964 and his PhD from the U of WI in 1967. He was a star college basketball player. During the Vietnam War he was in the Army Corps of Engineering where he was assigned to the Army Map Service. He accepted a post doctoral fellowship with the USGS in Menlo Park, CA. In 1985 he left the Survey to become the president of RPI Pacific. The company failed and he went on to become an oil exploration consultant. He taught workshops, and led field trips. Consulting took Tor all over the world. He remained interested in scientific research and its' dissemination, and he assumed various editorial duties in which he was a master. He received the Pacific Section AAPG's Honorary Life Membership Award and the CA Geology Hall of Fame Living Legends Award. When he died, he was coediting a world atlas of deep water depositis to be published by the AAPG. He was married to Paula Jeffries. They had 2 sons and 2 daughters. During his lifetime he published more than 300 books and papers. He was fluent in 5 languages. He died after a 6 yr. battle with melanoma.

Tor was an excellent geologist with a great love for the geology of the land.
