Dear Aunt Bessie,
Because of Uncle Willis, I had several honors placed on me. I had the priviledge of baptising one grandchild in exactly the same place Uncle Willis baptised others of the family 37 years ago. Another time to bless a baby, another a grandchild...they said they wanted me to do it because my uncle was the one who brought the gospel to them...Old Aunt Ficklin gave me a picture of Uncle Willis. I [She?] wouldn't take anything for it. It even had some of his handwriting on the back. These people sure thought a lot of Uncle Willis; it just seemed that they could not stop talking about him. You see-he and his companion were the first Elders they had ever seen. I wonder if Uncle Willis gave an account in his diary of the time he and his companion went into a house [to] ask for some water. The lady told them there was plenty of water in the river and for them to go there for water. In just a few days, the lady's well went dry and even she had start carrying water from the river. To this day, there has not ever been any water in that well. I have had lots of people relate this story to me. Most of them are not Mormons. There has been so many things, like that, happen to the people in this country, yet they still won't accept the Gospel. They, at least, won't mistreat the Elders because they are afraid some of these things will happen to them.

David John Rogers, a brother of Willis, was on his second mission in Texas in 1936 [at] the same time Vernon was on his mission. Bessie Rogers sent a copy of Vernon's letter telling about the well. David John wrote back and said, "Bessie, I have met a man that knew Willis in Louisiana when he was on his mission and he told me the same story about the lady and the well and other things he remembered about Willis."
