Poet. Known as 'The Laureate of the Confederacy, he compsed such poems as 'Ode to the Confederate Dead at Magnolia Cemetery', 'Carolina', 'The Cotton Ball', and 'Ethnogenesis'. Fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and died in poverty of Tuberculosis.
