A son of John Leppeaux and Johanna Gertrude Stoltz Bitting. Husband of Louisa Philippina Wilson Bitting. Joseph and Louisa were married in Yadkin Co. on Aug. 16, 1858. They were parents of 14 children--though some of them died very young.

According to the Jan. 5, 1901 Charlotte Observer, news out of Winston stated that Mr. Bitting had suffered a stroke of paralysis on Jan. 4. 1901. (He died in Winston before it merged with Salem.)
